Sonoma County

Sonoma County, located in California's North Coast in the San Francisco Bay Area, is about 45 minutes north of San Francisco. As such, it suffers from what could be dubbed the "Middle Child Syndrome:" Its main cities of Petaluma and Santa Rosa are small and provincial when compared to San Francisco; yet the area is not the untamed wilderness of California's North Coast. Sonoma County is not as well-known or touristy as the neighboring Napa Valley, which takes most of the credit for driving California's wine industry, nor as cosmopolitan as nearby San Francisco.

Contra Costa County

East of the Oakland Hills that border the East Bay, Contra Costa County maintains a very separate culture and lifestyle than its Bay Area neighbors. The area is mostly residential—although many San Francisco businesses have moved here to avoid high city taxes—and affluent, and consequently considerably more conservative. The same hills that keep Contra Costa culturally isolated also keep it protected climatically; the area is usually 10-20°F warmer than the Bay in summer.

Rutherford (California)

United States of America
Someday we will visit Rutherford (California) or begin to dream about going there! However, for now its not on our radar. Let us know in the comments if you think that should change!

Rutherford (California)

Rutherford is a small township in the Napa Valley region of California located between St. Helena and Oakville, along Hwy 29. This area of the valley was originally owned by General Vallejo and through a series of gifts became the property of Thomas and Elizabeth Rutherford as a wedding present 1964. The Rutherfords developed a winery, which grew to be one of the best wineries of the area. Now the town is home to high quality wineries and restaurants, a beautiful location to enjoy the wine country.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP covers an area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km²), 99.76% of it land, and 0.24% of it water.

Rutherford is located within the 11,887-acre (4,810 ha) Mexican land grant Rancho Caymus deeded to the early Napa Valley settler George C. Yount from General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo in 1838 as payment for a variety of services. Yount gave a 1,040-acre (421 ha) portion of the grant to his grand daughter Elizabeth and her husband Thomas Rutherford in 1864 as a wedding present. Thomas Rutherford established himself as a grower and producer of high-quality wines during the late 1800s.
